Turkey Glamour Shots & Other Turkey Day Memories

First I baked pies (’cause I’m an American house frau and it’s part of the job apparently).

Hehe! Victory is mine, barely any crackage. I was told they were delicious (I hate pumpkin pie – won’t touch the stuff).

Buttermilk pies. This was a bitter disappointment. Both Andy & Win said it was good, but I thought it tasted like ass. I had the most fabulous Buttermilk Pie at a local resturant a few months back and I thought my recipe would be just like theirs. No such luck. Now I feel bad about giving one of these away to the neighbors – they probably think I’m trying to poison them. Especially since another neighbor got the extra (good) pumpkin pie.

Ta-Da!

The Turkey!

And it tasted even better than it looks. We order our turkey from Whole Foods, for the past two years we’ve been requesting the Heirloom Turkey from Diestel and omg is it worth every penny. I swear you really can taste the difference.

Fat as a turkey…

Blackjack aka Wide Load aka Bad Kitty.

And Friday after a vet visit (expensive because apparently gerbils are “exotic”) and four days of anti-biotics twice a day for a lesion on his tummy, we had to say good-bye to Brownie yesterday.

Since the anti-biotics didn’t fix him we’re pretty sure the lesion was cancerous. The poor thing. Never mind the fact I didn’t want rats in my house in the first place. And the husband & the boy were the ones responsible for their care (ok, I did feed and water them on occasion) and cleaning the cage, I got all teary when we took him in to be put to sleep. We still have his brothers – Whitey & Blackie (yeah, I know – names). But who would’ve thought I had gotten attached the damn thing?

My husband wanted sweet potato pie so I made him 2 and I made 2 pecan pies for me..I also hate pumpkin pie and I hate sweet potato pie too..but love sweet potato’s.. Connie

  2. Your pies look amazing! I made a gingerbread pumpkin pie this year. While we all like pumpkin pie, the DDs proclaimed its awesomeness, so I think I’ll be doing it again next year. We didn’t do turkey this year, but I’ve done the Whole Foods turkey in the past. You are right, it is worth the money!

Sorry about Brownie. Funny how we get attached even when we don’t want to.

I’m with you – I hate pumpkin pie. That turkey looks awesome, and I hate turkey, too (I think it’s probably due to the fact that I think you have to be raised to like pumpkin pie & turkey, and I’ve only been in the country 16 years).

    I’m sorry about Brownie. 😦

I’m sorry to hear about your Brownie.

Awww, sorry about your little guy. 😦

I never thought to take glamour shots of our pies. LOL This year I made 2 pumpkin (the kind with the cream cheese bottoms), a peanut butter, and a caramel-pecan-chocolate one.

I’m sorry to hear about Brownie 😦

Re: the buttermilk pies – I make them all of the time, because my pie is famous… as in EPIC. Everyone is always asking me to make them. I’ll send you the recipe 🙂
